American League East Division
1- New York Yankees - Still the class of the East.
Japanese slugger Hideki Matsui was a good addition. Looking for another big year from the usual cast of Derek Jeter, Jason Giambi and Bernie Williams. Only potential weak spot in their lineup is Raul Mondesi, who struggled at the plate last year and came into camp overweight.
Starting pitching looks strong. Jeff Weaver is key. He is a fine young pitcher who had a case of the butterflies after being traded to the Bronx last season. He looked good in camp and should be fine. Cuban defector Jose Contreas has been a disappointment thus far. He is a wait-and-see player for now.
Yankees bullpen looks good with Mariano Rivera as the usual closer, but the middle relief guys will require watching. Always dependable Ramiro Mendoza is gone, as is Mike Stanton.
New York is left with Steve Karsay, who was spotty at times last season and is coming off surgery, and Chris Hammond, who the Yanks plucked from the Braves bullpen in the off-season. Can he duplicate last season's success? New York also has a healthy Sterling Hitchcock in their bullpen, who would be a starter on any other team.
2- Boston - As usual, the Red Sox look good on paper, but they always do before the season starts.
This season finds Boston's team with sluggers that can hit, but a pitching rotation that leaves some uncertainty after Pedro Martinez and Derek Lowe.
Boston will need John Burkett do pitch well again. That isn't a given, he is getting older. They have knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, who works well as a starter or in relief out of the pen. After that, they are left with Jeff Fossum, and Robert Person, who they acquired from Philly. Person didn't have a great year with Philly last season but he is a good pitcher.
Boston will need their 3-4-5 guys in the rotation to contribute, otherwise they will be in trouble. On the bright side they have improved their bullpen a lot by adding Mendoza from the Yankees, Alan Embree, and Mike Timlin from the Cardinals. Not too shabby.
3- Toronto* - I feel the Blue Jays are a team to keep an eye on. They will provide some value this season when wagering.
The Jays have good, young pitching with Roy Halladay the ace of the staff. They picked up Cory Lidle from Oakland, and Tanyon Sturtze, who pitched for Tampa last season, isn't nearly as bad as his record would indicate.
The Jays also have young pitcher Mark Hendrickson, and of course a good closer in Kelvim Escobar. Offensively, they have Shannon Stewart, Carlos Delgado, Vernon Wells and Frank Catalanotto, who was a good hitter with the Rangers before being injured.
The Blue Jays have potential.
4- Baltimore - Have made some strides, but not there yet. Good young pitchers led by Rodrigo Lopez, but they need more time to develop, and more sluggers.
5- Tampa - Acquiring manager Lou Pinella isn't enough to turn this franchise around yet. They also gave up their best talent on offense in Randy Winn. Expect another losing season.
American League Central Division
1- Minnesota - The Twins offense remains intact, the question will be with their pitching.
Eric Milton will be out until at least September, so the Twins will need to find another starter. They will also need a strong year from young guns Kyle Lohse and Joe Mays, and another good year from Rick Reed, who pitched very well last season.
The ace of the staff, Brad Radke, needs to cut down on the number of long balls he gave up last season. The Twins bullpen looks solid again.
2- Chicago White Sox* - The ChiSox intrigue me so much, I have them as a wild card team this season.
Landing Bartolo Colon was a huge addition to their staff. Add in last season's ace, Mark Buehrle, and that forms a great 1-2 punch in the starting rotation.
If Jon Garland, Dan Wright and Esteban Loaiza can hold their own and not hurt the team, the ChiSox could find themselves playing in the postseason.
Their bullpen improved by adding fastballers Billy Koch and Tom Gordon, who sat out last season injured with the Cubs. If Gordon can regain his form, he will be a big boost.
On offense, the White Sox have some guys who can flat out hit in Jose Valentin, Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Lee and Paul Konerko. If Frank Thomas can hit anything remotely close to his old self, watch out for the boys from the South side!
3- Kansas City - Offensively, the Royals look decent in the first five spots of their lineup. The bottom half of the lineup leaves much to be desired, as does their pitching staff. A third-place finish will be an improvement for them.
4- Cleveland - Not much to say about the Indians. They have some potential young players, but this is a team that gave up Jim Thome and is clearly in the rebuilding mode. Young ace C. C. Sabathia will only get better, but who else will step up? Don't expect much from the Tribe this season.
5- Detroit - Other than their closer Matt Anderson, I can't find much good to say about the Tigers. Sadly for Anderson, his team isn't usually leading in the ninth.
