In a bizarre finish, Sulamani (Ire) was declared the winner of Arlington Million XXI under jockey David Flores. As the field turned for home, pacesetter Beauchamp Pilot (GB) had finally given way to The Tin Man and Storming Home (GB). Gary Stevens had Storming Home running best of all near the wire, as Sulamani, Paolini (GER) and Kaieteur closed in. Suddenly, Storming Home appeared to shy from something in the infield just before the wire and veered severly to the right bumping Sulamani as the group crossed the finish line. Stevens fell to the turf and was clipped by trailing horses. Flores and Rene Douglas aboard Kaieteur objected, and the stewards ultimately dropped Storming Home from first to fourth. Paolini and Kaieteur dead-heated for place. Sulamani, on the far left wearing the red #1 saddle towel, was declared the winner and paid $7.60, $5.20 and $4.40; Paolini paid $7.20 and $9.40; and Kaieteur paid $12.00 and $13.00. Stevens was conscious as he was carried off on a stretcher but very sore and taken to the hospital for x-rays.
